You can ride the train from Silverton, through the Animas Canyon to Durango, then take an evening bus back to Silverton.
Who says you have to start your railroad adventure in Durango?

Ride the afternoon train from Silverton to Durango and take an evening bus back to Silverton:
June 6-Aug. 12: Depart Silverton on 1:45, 2:15 or 3 p.m. train; arrive in Durango 3-1/2 hours later. Depart Durango on 7:15 p.m. bus. Arrive in Silverton at 8:45 p.m.
