Subscriptions are $24 a year for Silverton residents, $48 a year for nonresidents.

The Silverton Standard and the Miner is a combination of two papers that date back to the early settlement of Silverton and continuous publishing since that time despite nearly twenty challengers to its position as “Silverton’s paper.”
The LaPlata Miner was founded and first published by John R. Curry on July 10, 1875. In 1893 the name was changed to the Silverton Weekly Miner. The Silverton Standard was founded and first published on November 2, 1889 by Charles S. Snowden.
On December 11, 1920, the two papers merged although “The Miner” was not included on the flag of the merged publication until several years later.
The desire for local ownership is not new. Although in the early days, all of the owners were nominally local, there were several situations, usually pointed out in competing papers, where the owners escaped “back east” for the winter months.
The recent history of the paper, now run as only a newspaper and not with ancillary business such as job printing, office supply sales, etc. often accompanying weekly newspapers in the past, is of three successive owners that have been far from local. The first, Liberty Group Publishing Co., based in Illinois eventually sold their Colorado holdings to GateHouse Media from Fairport, New York. Last summer GateHouse sold the paper to Randy Miller, a Boulder resident who operates it as a part of Telluride Newspapers.
With the newspaper facing financial difficulties, the previous owner, Randy Miller, donated it to the San Juan County Historical Society in May 2009.

In the last two years, the Standard has won 20 awards from the Colorado
Press Association, and was named best small weekly in the state for news
and editorial content in 2007, and best in the state for photography and
design in 2008.
Donations to the San Juan County Historical Society to keep the newspaper alive are tax deductible.
We may be owned by a nonprofit, but this is still a real business, with real advertising and real news.
