Seminar tonight looks at mine cleanup effort
A seminar on abandoned mine lands cleanup in the San Juans will be conducted tonight, Thursday, July 17, at Silverton Town Hall from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The event, part of Mountain Studies Institute’s summer education series, is free and opeen to the public.
Speaking will be Stephanie Odell, Abandoned Mine Lands Program, San Juan Public Lands (Forest Service/Bureau of Land Management).
Barbershoppers offer free Saturday concert
The public is invited to attend the final evening concert of the Silverton Barbershop Music Festival on Saturday, July 19, at 7 p.m. in the Silverton School Gym.
The Silverton festival brings together a cappella singers from Durango, Farmington, Montrose, Grand Junction, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Denver, and Glenwood Springs.
The two-hour concert will feature area barbershop choruses and quartets as well as songs by the 80-voice Silverton Barbershop Music Festival chorus. This year the chorus will be directed by Darin Drown of the Sound of the Rockies chorus, third-place international finalists.

Still room to line up
for Kendall Mtn. Run
About 150 runners are expected to start in front of the Grand Imperial at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 19, and head to the top of Kendall Mountain and back down again.
Steve Wolff, the only person to have run all 30 previous races, will lead them off at the sound of Wiley Carmack’s starting gun. Less than two hours later, the first runners will cross the finish line on 14th Street, adjacent to Town Hall.
The race will officially end at noon. Afterwards, racers and their families will enjoy a picnic and awards ceremony in Memorial Park hosted by High Noon and the deKay family.
Friday: 2–6 p.m. Friday at Smedley’s: Pre-registration and packet pickup.
Saturday: 6:30 a.m.–7:30 a.m. at Smedley’s: Last minute registration and packet pickup
8 a.m.: Start on Greene Street in front of the Grand Imperial Hotel.
