Silverton, Colo. - Silverton finally got a break from a series of winter storms Wednesday that brought heavy snow showers to the area for several days. On Saturday, an avalanche closed U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray. Town Public Works Director Gilbert Archuleta figures it’s the town’s heaviest snowfall this early in December since perhaps 1978.
