From left, volunteers Paul Beaber of Silverton, Russell Thomas of Westminster, Carl Gutknecht of Montrose and Joel Arnold of Durango place a grave marker Saturday at Hillside Cemetery, one of 16 markers placed. Cemetery historian Fred Peterson estimates there are 3,000 graves in the cemetery, with only about 1,000 marked. “Possibly some of those unmarked had wooden markers, a rock or something at one time,” she said. The first burial recorded at the cemetery was in 1875 (Rachel Farrow, age 6 years). More than 40 volunteers turned out Saturday, June 21, for the 15th annual Cemetery Cleanup Day. “We have placed 224 tombstones on unmarked graves at Hillside Cemetery,” Peterson said. These are paid for by the Hillside Cemetery Fund or by individuals making donations to the fund. The cooperation of Family Craft Memorials in Durango has made this possible over the last 20-25 years.
