With 705 voters registered in San Juan County, the polls will be open next Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Most critical of the local races has three independent candidates for sheriff vying for that position. Jim Watson, an appointee, resigned as sheriff effective Oct. 1 and while Undersheriff Sue Kurtz has been filling the position since that time, no appointment has actually been made by the county commissioners.
Kurtz, along with Steve Baxter and Rob Aronson, are the candidates on the ballot.
Silverton firemen responded to an alarm early this morning. The 1:30 a.m. fire was at the Silverton Dude Corral barn, now owned by Tom Stanley. Considerable damage was done to the structure before the flames were brought under control.
