County offices up for election.
With San Juan County Clerk Dorothy Zanoni retiring, and County Assessor Judy Zimmerman stepping down after 20 years on the job, races are shaping up for the county offices.
County Democrats and Republicans held their assemblies Tuesday evening, March 30, with the Democrats nominating Deputy Assessor/Treasurer Dan Salazar for the assessor’s job and the Republicans nominating Brent Westlund for the same position.
In the race for county clerk, Patricia E. Kost and Deputy County Clerk Ladonna Jaramillo say they plan to run for the position as unaffiliated candidates.
Voters will also select a county treasurer on Nov. 2, with incumbent Bev Rich nominated for the position by the Democrats.
Meanwhile Sheriff Sue Kurtz says she plans to run for re-election as an unaffiliated candidate. And County Board Chairman Ernie Kuhlman says he also plans to seek re-election without a party affiliation. County Coroner Keri Metzler said she too plans to seek re-election as an unaffiliated candidate.
Those wishing to run for any county office may petition to get on the ballot for the Aug. 10 primary election if running as a Democrat or Republican. They may also petition to get on the ballot for the Nov. 2 election if they wish to be unaffiliated.
Eleven Democrats and five Republicans convened to select delegates to upcoming assemblies to pick candidates for the state assembly, state senate, and Congress.
Rich noted that the April 17 Democratic assemblies for House District 59 and Senate District 6 are scheduled to take place in Silverton, bringing 90 delegates to town.
The Republicans will hold their 6th Senate District assembly in Ridgway on April 17, and the 59th House District assembly in Durango the same day.
Two Republicans seeking to replace Ellen Roberts as state representative met with the county Republicans on Tuesday.
Gary Kennedy of Mancos and J. Paul Brown of Ignacio are seeking the seat.
Democrat Brian O’Donnell is also seeking that seat.
In the 6th Senate District, Sen. Bruce Whitehead of Hesperus, appointed to replace Jim Isgar last year, is running against Roberts.
