Former Silverton resident was nationally known writer and teacher.
Former Silverton resident David LaChapelle died Tueday, July 21, 2009, in Durango after a battle with throat cancer.
He was born Oct. 8, 1952 in Denver, the son of Mary Dolores and Edward R. LaChapelle.
David was home-schooled in a one-room schoolhouse by his mother, with one other child in Alta, Utah, during the winter months and attended public school in Kirkland, Wash., during the rest of the year.
Summers, David spent with his parents in a small cabin on the Blue Glacier in the Olympic Mountains and learned the complexities of helping with glacier research as his schooling.  He later attended Woodside Priory in Northern California and the University of Washington for a short time before recognizing his learning style was best suited for experiential learning and travel rather than in a classroom.
David's quest for knowledge and research continued throughout the entirety of his life.
David's loves include spending time in beautiful natural settings;  skiing and hiking;  playing guitar and singing; research and writing; photography and Photoshop manipulation; creating artworks through multiple art mediums that inspire and uplift others.
David was a nationally known writer and teacher. His books include “Navigating the Tides of Change,” “Mountains of Light,” “A Voice on the Wind,” “A Hymn of Changes” and “The Storyteller’s Mirror.”
David was preceded in death by his mother Dolores La Chapelle Jan. 21, 2007, quickly followed by his father Ed La Chapelle Feb. 1, 2007.
He is survived by loving companion Ananda Elise Foley of Silverton, maternal aunts Patricia Hubbard of Cortez and Adrienne Bergstrom of Golden, Colo., paternal aunt M’Lou Doyle of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., several cousins, and his father’s companion of 20 years, Meg Hunt, of Olympia, Wash.
Memorial services will be conducted Aug. 9  in Silverton, Aug. 8(?) in Boulder, and Aug. 30 in Yosemite National Park.
Close friends will offer main ceremonies. Friends and family will be invited to share during talking circles as well.
Memorial contributions toward the medical expenses accrued during David’s care are gratefully welcome by Ananda Foley, P.O. Box 542, Silverton, CO 81433.
