No one signs on to join school board
The Silverton School District has been unable to find anyone interested in serving on the school board.
School board president Cliff Pohlman resigned last month, noting that he plans to travel the country with his family this winter.
Paul Zimmerman was then elected school board president by the board, and the school district placed advertisements seeking a community member who might want to fill the remaining vacancy on the 5-person board.
The school board had hoped to make the appointment at its Oct. 12 meeting, but no one has of yet applied for the unpaid position.
 
Hickenlooper, Salazar to hold campaign rally here
Democratic Party candidate for governor John Hickenlooper and U.S. Rep. John Salazar will hold campaign rally Monday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m., at Silverton Town Hall. 
 
 
School’s website 
has new features
Silverton School’s website, www.silvertonschool.org has gotten an upgrade that will allow parents to check on their students’ attendance records — and homework assignments.
The website also includes updates on school activities and the school calendar, school board meeting agendas, and the school district budget.
 
Silverton middle school is declared a ‘Center of Excellence’
The Silverton middle school has been recognized by the Colorado  Department of Education for its excellence in serving students considered at risk of failure.
Each year, the Colorado Department of Education recognizes public schools in the state that enroll a student population of which at least 75 percent are at-risk pupils and that demonstrate the highest rates of student longitudinal growth, as measured by the Colorado Growth Model. The Silverton Middle School has received this Centers of Excellence award for the year 2010.  
In addition to the award certificate, the school received $1,500, which will be spent on academic materials.  
 
Commodities to be distributed on Oct. 25 
Commodities distribution will occur on Monday, Oct. 25, from 1-3 p.m. in the basement of the Miners Union Hospital building.  
Eligibility for this service must be determined prior to receiving the commodities.  Any interested family needing an eligibility determination may stop by the Social Services office at the courthouse from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25.

Preschool to celebrate 
its 5th anniversary at its new building
The Silverton Family Learning Center (SFLC) is celebrating its fifth anniversary in the new school building at 195 E. 16th Street in Silverton. 
The nonprofit organization was founded in 2003, and the school was completed on Nov. 1, 2005 with grant funding from more than 10 Colorado foundations and the Department of Local Affairs. 
SFLC would invites the whole community to an open house at Learning Center on Thursday, Nov. 4  from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuevres and beverages will be provided.  
SFLC school children will be present to share their projects and provide tours of their classrooms. Come experience our beautiful early childhood learning center and meet our Director, staff and artist-in-residence. 
SFLC also announces the election of Holly Pratz, Kindergarten and first-grade teacher at the Silverton Public School, as president of the SFLC Board of Directors.  
Holly is a certified teacher and has been an active board member for several years. SFLC welcomes Holly to her new role and thanks interim president and SFLC founder Karen Hoskin for her seven years of dedicated service to the organization.
