Al Harper has suggested a tram ride across the canyon
as a tourist attraction as an alternative to a proposal to
rebuild a stretch of the Silverton Northern Railroad.
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad owner Al Harper is skeptical of a plan to rebuild a 2.5-mile stretch of the old Silverton Northern Railroad north of town.
And he offered his own bold idea for an alternative that could give Silverton’s economy a shot in the arm — developing a dramatic tourist ride on the Mayflower tram across the Animas River Canyon.
Harper voiced his concerns about the proposal put forward by Silverton resident Fritz Klinke to rebuild the railroad from the powerhouse to Howardsville and offer short excursions.
