No talent needed for March 12 talent show
Silverton’s annual winter talent show is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at Town Hall.
It is a benefit for nonprofit organizations in town.
Organizer Amy Swonger said no real talent is needed to take part and she encourages residents to come up with some goofy acts.

Red Cross is out for blood on March 16
The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive on Wednesday, March 16, from 1:30 to 6 p.m., at Kendall Mountain Community Center. 
“We’re always looking for new donors,” said volunteer Judy Kuhlman of Silverton.

FREE HIV testing and counseling available
The San Juan County Public Health will be sponsoring free confidential HIV/AIDs testing and counseling at the Public Health Office on Thursday, March 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   
The testing is being offered by the Western Colorado Aids Project (WestCAP) based out of Grand Junction.  
The CDC (Center for Communicable Disease) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13-64 have yearly HIV testing. Come get tested in a confidential setting at no cost to you!  
 WestCAP is a community-based referral, advocacy and service provider offering non-judgmental, confidential and compassionate assistance to HIV –affected persons, families and loves ones.  
WestCAP also promotes prevention and education about HIV and AIDS to the people of western Colorado and charges no fees. Services are provided without regard to age, sex, race, religion, disability or sexual orientation.  
The rapid HIV test itself takes a few minutes to perform, and looks for HIV antibodies in someone’s body.  Test results are available in 15 minutes.  Please call the Grand Junction office to make an appointment, toll free at (800) 765-8594 or (970) 243-2437. “Walk ins” are also welcome.
 
Child Safety Seat Day events March 19 at the fire department
A Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspection and Installation Day will be conducted on Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silverton San Juan Volunteer Fire Department station at the Carriage House, 1450 Greene Street.
Bring your car seats and kids for free seat installation,free inspection and free lunch.
Kids can explore fire department, sheriff’s office and Silverton Ambulance Association equipment along with a real NASCAR stock car, and get autographs from NASCAR driver Alex Kennedy.
Under Colorado law, all children under the age of 8 are required to be restrained in a child safety seat when traveling in a motor vehcile.
This event is sponsored by the Southwest Regional Emergency and Tramua Advisory Council, and the Silverton Ambulance Association.
 
Kendall Mtn. ski area 
to be open March 11-20
Kendall Mountain Ski Area will be open from March 11 to March 20 all week long, with the lift operating from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We’re trying to get some extra business,” said Tana Wrublik of Silverton Special Events. She said it is spring break in Texas and many visitors are expected.
