Eric Petranek was thinking it was pretty much over for him as his SUV was plunging off U.S. 550 just this side of the Red Mountain Pass summit.
“I was convinced it was the end,” Petranek said Tuesday.
But as it turned out it was only the beginning. First, his 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee tumbled 330 feet down from the road. Then, when Petranek came to, he had yet another problem. The vehicle was on fire.
