Ron Pense, ‘The Bike Man,’ dies at age 83
Ron Pense, 83, “the Bike Man,” of Silverton, died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 9.
He was born in Longview, Wash., on March 15, 1928, the youngest of six children.
Pense was well known in Silverton for providing low-cost used bicycles to Silvertonians and free bicycles to children who could not afford ones.

A Theatre Group will hold its second-ever Costume Sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion’s Al Holmann Memorial Hall.
All aboard for Local Appreciation train
on Sunday, Oct. 30
The last regularly scheduled passenger train to Silverton is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, but the annual special Silverton Local Appreciation Train will run on Sunday, Oct. 30.
The train will depart Silverton at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at Durango for a 2-hour layover. It will depart Durango for Silverton at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets, at only $20 each, are available for Silverton residents only until Oct. 14. Tickets for residents of Ouray, Telluride and Ridgway residents will be available after Oct. 14.
Tickets must be paid for at the time of booking and proof of residency is required. Tickets are nonrefundable.

Council gives final OK for ATV staging area
The Silverton Town Council gave final approval Monday night to an ordinance making the ATV staging area at Silver Lakes Campground a permanent facility, along with allowing access to it along town streets.
The ordinance was approved in a unanimous vote.
ATVs are still banned from the streets of Silverton, with the exception of the truck bypass below the cemetery and a short section of street right of ways within the Silverton Lakes Campground property.
