County OKs move too; Silverton-San Juan Fire and Rescue District to be formed.
The formation of a formal Silverton-San Juan Fire and Rescue Authority received unanimous approval from the Silverton Town Council on Monday, Oct. 24.
The San Juan County Commissioners did the same on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
The formation of the authority comes after a year of discussions on the structure of the volunteer fire department, which is jointly funded by the Town of Silverton and San Juan County.
“We’ve been concerned with the fact that the fire department didn’t adhere to any recognizable structure,” said Town Administrator Jason Wells. Both the town attorney and county attorney, for instance, have refused to represent the department in the event of any litigation. And the town’s insurer has also declined to offer coverage for the department under its current structure or lack thereof.
