A 25-year-old Denver woman was killed Saturday morning, Jan. 14, at Silverton Mountain Ski Area, after falling and sliding some 1,500 vertical feet, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim was identified as Sydney Elizabeth Owens. She was on a guided ski tour skiing the Riff Run at about 10:06 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Emergency personnel at Silverton Mountain rendered assistance but were unable to revive Owens, according to the sheriff's office.
It was the first fatal accident in 10 years of operations of Silverton Mountain Ski Area.
Silverton Mountain co-owner Jen Brill said Owens “lost control and slid down the Riff run at Silverton Mountain and suffered fatal injuries.”
Riff is a lift-served expert slope near the chairlift. At the time of the accident she was wearing a helmet and skiing in a guided group, Brill said. Patrol and emergency personnel quickly responded and resuscitative efforts were undertaken without success.
