Residents and visitors to Silverton and San Juan County are used to seeing the ambulance roll to the rescue in response to various medical emergencies.
Now the county commissioners are asking voters here to come to the rescue of the ambulance itself, with a 1 percent sales tax increase on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The commissioners last week unanimously approved a ballot measure to boost the county’s sales tax from 4 percent to 5 percent.
That would raise about $136,000 a year to provide better compensation for volunteers, increase the service’s paid staff and keep up with the rising costs of medical supplies and other equipment.
