The San Juan County Commissioners have unanimously approved granting a 99-year easement to the San Juan County Historical Society to rebuild a 2.5-mile stretch of the old Silverton Northern Railroad between the Powerhouse and Howardsville.
But the proposed railroad still has a long way to go to become reality. It’s estimated cost is more than $2 million, with no funding source identified. And a feasibility study has yet to test whether the project actually makes sense.
Meanwhile, the owner of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has vowed to fight the effort at every turn.
