The wye intersection serves as the entrance to Silverton from U.S. 550.
State highway officials say they are open to suggestions on possible improvements to the wye intersection at U.S. 550 and Greene Street, but they cited a review of the intersection that found only two accidents there in the last 10 years.
Town and county officials have complained that the intersection is confusing and hazardous to motorists unfamiliar with it.
And the town/county master plan calls for both beautification efforts and better traffic flow there.
Michael McVaugh, traffic and safety engineer for the Colorado Department of Transportation regional office in Durango, said that between Jan. 1, 2002 and Dec. 31, 2011 two motor vehicle accidents were reported on U.S. 550 between the Mineral Creek Bridge and around the curve in the wye to the CDOT information sign on the highway headed to Ouray.
