1980s Skiing is the theme for this year's Winter Festival in Silverton -- Feb. 8-10
It was a time when the mines in Silverton were humming, big-hair bands ruled, MTV was the newest sensation and the nation’s first 24-hour television news network, CNN, was just getting started.
It was the 1980s, and, as it happens, “Ski ‘80s” will be the theme of this year’s Silverton Snowscape winter festival scheduled for Feb. 8-10.
The schedule of events is still being finalized but some details are taking shape:
• This year’s Snowscape will again feature night skiing, this time with fireworks scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday night, Feb. 9.
Event organizer Karen Srebacic said she needs a few volunteers to pick up and deliver the night ski lights, and help with judging Snowscape events. Call her at (970) 759-5557.
• The theme for the popular Carboard Derby, in which carboard sledding devices are built and put to the test on Kendall Mountain, is “Favorite 1980s Bands.”

evening of Feb. 8
The annual snowmobile parade for Snowscape will be on Friday, Feb. 8. Anyone wishing to join the parade should meet at the corner of 11th and Greene (Buddha Belly) at 6:30 p.m.
