It's Time for Snowscape!
From Silverton Standard, the place where you can write!
Posted on February 07 2013, 2:16pm by Mark Esper in Local News category

It was a time when the mines in Silverton were humming, big-hair bands ruled, MTV was the newest sensation and the nation’s first 24-hour television news network, CNN, was just getting started.
It was the 1980s, and, as it happens, “Ski ‘80s” will be the theme of this year’s Silverton Snowscape winter festival scheduled for Feb. 8-10.
The schedule of events is still being finalized but some details are taking shape:
• This year’s Snowscape will again feature night skiing, this time with fireworks scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday night, Feb. 9.
Event organizer Karen Srebacic said she needs a few volunteers to pick up and deliver the night ski lights, and help with judging Snowscape events. Call her at (970) 759-5557.
• The theme for the popular Cardboard Derby, in which Cardboard sledding devices are built and put to the test on Kendall Mountain, is “Favorite 1980s Bands.”

Snowmobile Parade
evening of Feb. 8
The annual snowmobile parade for Snowscape will be on Friday, Feb. 8. Anyone wishing to join the parade should meet at the corner of 11th and Greene (Buddha Belly) at 6:30 p.m.
The parade route runs to the Recreation Center where the annual bonfire will be held at 7 p.m.

Winter Golf Classic tees off on Saturday
The Silverton Snowscape Winter Classic Golf Tournament  will be teeing off Saturday morning at the Train Depot on 10th Street.
The two person scramble will feature $10 per team prizes! Check in/start is at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.
Winter Triathlon, brunch Sunday
Mountain Studies Institute is putting on the inaugural Silverton Winter Triathlon and Relay this Sunday as part of Snowscape festivities.
The event starts at 10 a.m. at Kendall Mountain Ski Area.
It’s a nontraditional winter triathlon and relay followed by a community brunch.
Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
Participants can take part as an individual or as a team of three in this event for all ages.
The event will consist of the following segments:
• Run up the ski hill on foot and slide/sled down on anything except skis or snowboards.
• A 1+ mile cross-country ski loop out to the Lackawanna Mill and back.
• A half-mile snowshoe run around the pond near the ski area.
All participants must bring their own equipment.
To add to excitement, between each leg there will be a series of fun challenges to be completed before setting out on the next segment. The challenges will remain a mystery until race day.
