The Silverton Town Council has unanimously approved the use of unlicensed ATVs and off-highway vehicles on town streets for two special events this summer, but with some stipulations.
The town staff was instructed to draft an ordinance to require any such ATV users to be licensed drivers with proof of insurance.
And the council said no more such special-event use of ATVs will be permitted until after the two events already approved have been assessed.
“This gives us a chance to see if there’s something we didn’t think about that we should have,” said Town Trustee David Zanoni, who also sat on the ATV advisory board.
And the vehicles will be restricted to certain routes designed to allow access to and from campgrounds, downtown, Kendall Mountain Road and other county roads.
