Council hearing 
on special events 
petition April 22
The Silverton Town Council public hearing on the petition to hire a special events coordinator has been rescheduled for Monday, April 22 at 5:30 p.m.
Town Administrator Jason Wells said the change was made so that Susan Fairweather, Dillon’s director of economic development, could attend.
“I got in touch with Susan knowing her to have made tremendous strides in that community on a very modest budget and as someone who might be able to provide us with some sound guidance as we begin to find ways to better promote the community holistically,” Wells said.
On March 11, petitions signed by 194 people were submitted to the Town Council asking the town to hire a marketing and special events director to help boost the town’s tourism-based economy.
Mining conference in Lake City April 18-19
The third annual San Juan Mining Conference will be held April 18-19 at the Mosely Art Center in Lake City.
The conference, hosted by Mountain Studies Institute, will feature speakers from all over the San Juans and topics relevant to mining in the past, present and future. More information is available at mountainstudies.org.
Backcountry roads
beginning to open
The San Juan County Road crew has begun opening backcountry roads. Currently the following roads are open:
• Christ of the Mines Shrine Road.
•South Mineral to the campground.
• Lower Cunningham Gulch road.
• Arrastra Gulch to where the road forks.
• County Road to to Burns Gulch (soon to Animas Forks).
