Brass band festival brings music to town Aug. 16-18
The 32nd annual Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band Festival will be held Aug. 16-18 at a new location this year — the Silverton School gym.
The Festival Band, conducted by Paul Maybery, will be giving free concerts throughout the weekend.
Concerts are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 at noon and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 18 at noon. The music will include overtures, fantasies, potpourris, serenades and marches.
Wild West Railfest to steam into Silverton
The 2013 Railfest weekend takes place Aug. 15-18 this year. For the 2013 Railfest, The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is partnering with True West Magazine to bring you “True West Railfest.”
True West Railfest will encompass Western-style cowboy events, exciting rail-related special events, and excursions with visiting narrow-gauge railroad equipment, including the RGS Galloping Goose and the Denver & Rio Grande Western #315. All the events will pay tribute to Durango’s colorful railroading past.

Tickets are now on sale for an Aug. 24 waffle breakfast fund raiser at Columbine Park on Blair Street.
Waffle breakfast is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tickets must be purchased by Aug. 14 at the Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center. Call (970) 387-5654 for “will hold.”
There will be an Antique Truck, Car and Tractor Parade and Show that day.
The parade is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. And vehicles will be displayed from 11:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Blair Street.
Hillside Cemetery tour is Saturday, Aug. 17
The Victorian Aid Society of Durango will be offering its annual tour of Hillside Cemetery again this year as a fundraiser for the San Juan County Historical Society.
It will be on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. There is no charge for the tour, but we will be accepting donations for the SJCHS.
