The eighth running of the Silverton Alpine Marathon and 50K is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, with a course that will take runners to Howardsville, Animas Eureka, Animas Forks and Gladstone.
The race starts and ends at Silverton Memorial Park, with the 50K runners starting at 7 a.m. and the marathon (26.7 miles) starting at 8 a.m.
Last year 23 runners completed the marathon and 24 completed the 50K run.

Antique trucks to roll on Blair St. Saturday
A parade of old trucks, cars and tractors Saturday morning, Aug. 24, will be the highlight of the vintage vehicle show planned on Blair Street.
The day starts with a waffle breakfast at Columbine Park at 9. The vintage vehicle parade starts at 10:30 a.m.
And the vehicles will be displayed on Blair Street until 3:30 p.m.
Hearing Monday on town regulation of
retail marijuana sales
The Silverton Town Council will hold a public hearing Monday, Aug. 26 regarding whether and to what extent the Town will allow the operation of retail marijuana businesses within the Town limits.
Colorado voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana use and sales in the November 2012 election, and state licensing for retail outlets is expected to start in January 2014.
Trentini Celebration of Italian heritage Sept. 1 at Villa Dallavalle
The Silverton Annual Trentini Celebration will be held Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Villa Dallavalle Inn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost is $10 and bring a side dish to share.

Colorfest Quilt Show Sept. 7-8 at school gym
Silverton’s Colorfest Quilt Show is scheduled for Sept. 7-8 at the Silverton School gym.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
Hundreds of quilts from around the country will be featured, along with unique vendors with fabrics, patterns and supplies.
Hourly door prices and a charity quilt drawing will be offered. Admission is $3. Proceeds go to local nonprofit organizations.
Solar viewing offered on Saturday, Aug. 24
There will be a public solar viewing Saturday, Aug. 24 at the observatory at 969 Reese Street in Silverton.
The viewing will be from 10 a.m until noon and is cosponsored by the Silverton Mountain School and the Black Canyon Astronomy Society.
This is an opportunity to view the sun safely through a variety of solar telescopes. Supervised children are welcome. Please enter from the alley behind the observatory. Let’s hope for clear skies.
