The ceremonial first spike for the Silverton Northern Railroad Intepretive Center was driven Sunday afternoon in a ceremony presided over by Fritz Klinke, chairman of the San Juan County Historical Society’s Silverton Northern project.

“the San Juan County Historical Society endorsed this project after years of chit-chat,” Klinke said. He pointed out the group has a 99-year lease of a right-of-way to Howardsville, 2.5 miles up the Animas.

Klinke credited Loren Lew and Mike Geryak for much of the hard work that went into the 200 feet of track laid so far north of the Powerhouse.

“My role has been to watch and to lay out tools and spikes,” Klinke said.

“This is a demonstration track,” he said. “Just to show people we can do it.”

He says the project has a long way to go “but to get to this point is significant.”
