A complete fire ban will take effect in Silverton and San Juan County at midnight tonight.

That includes a prohibition of smoking outdoors, any campfires, or grills.

Both the Silverton Town Board and San Juan County Board of Commissioners, in an emergency meeting late Sunday afternoon, June 2, adopted emergency ordinances to that effect in unanimous votes.

“Any kind of open flame is going to be taken very seriously,” Sheriff Bruce Conrad said.

The emergency ordinance includes a penalty including a mandatory summons and a fine of up to $1,000.

“The big thing we’re going to be doing is cracking down on smoking,” Conrad said. “That stops at midnight tonight. My instructions are to find the first person smoking outside and charge them.”
