In March, as the COVID-19 Crisis shut down Silverton’s economy, the San Juan County Department of Social Services saw a 650 percent increase in new food assistance and medical assistance applications compared to March of 2019.
“That sounds like an insane number,” said Social Services Director Kristina Rhoades. “But it was an increase from two applications in 2019 to 15 applications in 2020.”
