Coronavirus concerns lead to the decision

Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, all aspects of the 2020 Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run have been canceled, race officials announced on Saturday.

This includes the Silverton-based 100-mile run, Camp Hardrock and the Hardrock 100 Mountain Running Camp.

“Over the past two months, the Board of Directors and Run Committee completed a thorough decision-making process,” race officials stated. “This process included consultations with key officials within the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), public health departments and the local communities that support Hardrock.”

Race director Dale Garland said Hardrock Hundred officials “have met tirelessly over these past months. We know the economic impact to the region, as well as the desire of our runners — already postponed for a year — to experience Hardrock.”

Last year’s run was canceled due to issues with snowfall and avalanche debris.

“In the end, safety to all was the overriding factor,” Garland said.

“Our event gathers runners, volunteers, crew and more from around the world into small, isolated mountain communities,” Garland said. “We spent a lot of time asking questions and considering options, trying to find a safe version of Hardrock we could hold this year, but the difficult final decision was to cancel the run. We look forward to seeing every member of the Hardrock family in the San Juans in 2021.”

Hand sanitizer stations coming to town parks

The Town of Silverton plans to establish hand sanitizer stations in town parks and facilities, pending the arrival of a shipment of dispensers.

Silverton Director of Facilities, Parks and Recreation Todd Bove said Tuesday the town has 25 gallons of hand sanitizer, but the order of touchless dispensers was delayed.

They’re expected to arrive June 11, and Bove said he intends to come up with a distribution system by week’s end.

“In the end, safety to all was the overriding factor.”
